What emotions or thoughts did you experience while watching La Misma Luna in regards to immigration?

While I was watching La Misma Luna I thought it was interesting to see how people will risk it all to make it to America. To me, it is hard to believe that people have it that bad in Mexico that they want to come and work for almost nothing in America.

I agree with nicole Mexico doesn't seem that bad of a place to live because everyone goes their for a vacation spot but you never see how they actually live noone knows their life it seems.

The movie showed me that even little kids are willing to risk their lives. Parents are willing to leave their kids alone with people whom they can't seem to trust all the time which is ridiculous just to live this life in america. Maybe america should be more lenient on immigration so people wouldn't risk their lives.

While I watched La Misma Luna, I was really shocked like nichole was. I didnt realize either that people in Mexico really had it that bad. I was astonished that people would risk their lives to come live in America. I know i would never be able to go throught that.

Unlike the first three, I didn't find it hard to believe that Mexicans have a terrible life. Just by the number of Mexicans that immigrate or illegally cross into our country each day, it shows that life in Mexico cannot be a good one. Mexico is where their real 'home' is, where their traditions are, and where a lot of their family is; therefore if they are willing to risk their lives to run from these things that would seem to be all they need to be happy, it must be bad. I knew it wasn't easy to sneak over to America, and I don't think it should be easy, but this movie really put it into perspective for me. It made me really realize the fear and disappointment these Mexicans must go through, when most of them are just desiring a job and a better place to live. This movie showed me that the only struggle for an illegal alien is not just crossing the border. The struggles for an illegal alien will remain with them for the rest of their lives while living in America or until they receive their papers. This movie saddened me to see families such as this one torn apart, especially knowing that it actually happens all the time. But, as Americans I don't think we can just allow anyone and everyone in either. Too bad there isn't a happy medium for everyone in the world to be happy with.

I just hit ctrl A by accident and then backspace and I was on the last sentence of my "blog"...sigh. I did not get to see the whole movie so I did not know exactly what was going on ,but I have gotten to see firsthand what people in Mexico live in. We got to go on a mission trip to Juarez and build a house for a family that literally lived in a garbage dump. I am pretty uninformed on the politics of the immigration issues ,but putting a face on the people we are holding out kind of gives a different viewpoint. I do not know all the cons of letting Mexican people cross the border so I can't really say which side I am on ,but I can say that if they want to come take lower paying jobs in America and work harder at them than Americans do I say they deserve that right. If someone else could better explain the cons that would be helpful although in this kind of setting it would be kind of hard not to seem like a jerk.

I would have to agree with Nadia on the way that the movie showed us the risk that people will take to be in America. It is sad to know conditions are that bad. You never see the real Mexico, only the resorts.

The movie showed me how important it can be to some people to have the money and better life to raise a family with. I shocks me that you would be able to just leave your child for that long. I dont know what I wouldve done at that age without a mother or father. I know that the movie is older, but a family that doesnt have a lot of technology like them would not be able to communicate which would make things worse, but even being able to speak to someone you care and love.

I agree with Eva, if I had a child there is no way I could just up and leave them. It is good to try to make a better life for yourself and your child, but I couldnt be seperated for that much time. It's hard to go a few days without wanting and needing to talk to my parents when they are gone, so I cant imagine being a kid and not seeing my parent for a few years.
I work at a daycare and I miss certain kids when they go on vacation or leave for awhile, and they aren't even my own children, so having to be away from a child that would be mine for a long period of time would definitly be very, very hard for me.

Aaah I did the same thing Ryan did... this is annoying.

Anyway, I also have seen firsthand, through a mission trip just like Ryan, the living conditions in Mexico. I went on a trip with my church youth group the summer after my freshman year. While it sounds like Ryan's group did more hard labor, we more just interacted with the people and prayed with them. We visited several orphanages, and a few different slums. The slums were the worst - as Ryan said, they literally are living in a garbage dump. We were not allowed to drink the water, because it was infested. I can definitely see why someone would want to escape what we saw.

On the issue of immigration, I agree that border security is necessary, but I don't think the selectiveness of our government as to who is granted citizenship and how it is done. I think if a person can pass a test showing they have a basic knowledege of American History, the English Language, and how our government works, they should be allowed to live in America and contribute to our society. And yes, they are willing to do the jobs people here despise for lower wages. Making it easier for Mexicans to work and live in the United States would not be a bad thing.

In regards to immigration, whether immigrants do it legally or illegally it takes guts. Would you have the courage to do what Carlito did in his means to be with his mother? Could you imagine being without your parent that long? I know I couldn't even begin to imagine doing something like that. It's dangerous at that, too, but also understandable. It really shows the true meaning of being a family and wanting the best for that family and doing anything to have that.

Hopefully I wrote enough..

I agree with Julie. I can not imagine leaving my child behind in a whole different country. It would be the hardest thing anyone could do. And only being able to talk to them once a week and not see them for years!!! I understand their conditions are bad, but I think i would find another way.
I think this movie did a very good job in portraying all of the emotions and the problems they might run into.

I also concur with Julie and Erin. A child is a huge deal in a person's life and it would be like leaving behind a part of yourself. The things that people will go through when their situation is bad enough is hard to imagine let alone do it if it was you in that position. The movie showed it from a both of their views and it really showed how difficult and how much courage it would take to pull off something like that. I don't necessarily think immigrating is the best way, but all in all you have to do what you have to do even if the risks are unimaginable.

I think this movie helped to show what immigrants have to go through when they migrate to the united states, it is definitely not the easiest thing to do.I agree with Brittany leaving a child would be difficult. That shows how determined they are to leave their home just to start all over somewhere new with strangers, in a place where they are always watching their backs knowing there is always danger lurking around the corner.

I have no problem with immigrants coming over into America illegally because honestly we (as a country) have nothing to lose with them coming over here. Honestly, most Americans think they are too good to take the jobs that illegal immigrants would take in a heart beat, so I agree with Oso on that there's nothing wrong with them wanting to come over here and work hard to make a living.

But I don't think they should be allowed to come over here because too many American buisness owners take advantage of illegal immigrants. The buisness owners know that if one of their illegal employees gets their finger chopped off, they don't have to pay for the medical bills or anything like that because they are illegal. If someone found out where that illegal immigrant's finger got chopped off at, than the buisness owner would get into trouble. So knowing this, too many American business owners take advantage of illegal immigrants, and I don't think that that is right. So in order to protect illegal immigrants from situtaions like these, we shouldn't have them come over here so easily.

I liked the movie. I never knew that's what people from Mexico have to go through when they immigrated illegally. I know illegal immigration is a problem with the U.S. but I also think that Mexicans should earn their citizenship like everyone else. The movie was touching though because it showed that not only adults immigrate illegally but little kids do it too, and by them selves. -which is crazy. They risk their lives big time just to live in America hoping for a better life.

I agree with tracy that there is a lot more to immigrants than just getting across the border. They have to deal with keeping their identities and at the same time be safe and healthy. While watching this movie it was somewhat emotional. I never really knew how much they went through to just be in the United States. Also, seeing the bond between the mother and her son was very cool too. I thought the movie all around was great and very entertaining and actually taught us something. It taught us about how lucky we are and how good we have it, being able to live here in the United States with our families and we don't have to worry about being forced to live somewhere else.

I think the movie was reality. Many people risk their lives coming to america. Usually people take vacations there so how could it be that bad? I thought it was foolish of the mother to leave her son in mexico because he would obviously try to come and find her in america if something were to happen to his gaurdian. The fact that little children also risk their life to come to america should take an impact on america and i agree with meghan to maybe lessen the requirements of immagration because little kids are risking their lives. I also felt bad for the little boy because he had no one to travel with until he met that one guy. La misma luna was a touching movie and i would watch it agian.

I really enjoyed this movie. It really put in perspective what people will go through to be with their loved ones. I thought the boy was very lucky he made it across the border to and to him mother safetly. Even though I liked this movie it didn't seem like it could ever happen. Also it really showed why the immigrants cross the border. I think too many time look at immigrants as bad people and we dislike them, but this reminded me that they are real people to looking to improve there life. And many times they have to cross the border illegaly to access this better life. This is my favorite movie I've watched in a Spanish class.

I disagree with Cecila on the fact that it was foolish for the mother to leave her son. I believe she did this soley to make a better life for her and her son to have. I believe it was courageous, especially loving her son so much and having to leave him would be very hard. I also agree with Mallory on the fact that it is fine for mexican immigrants to come over to America, but I think they should get their citizenship. I also disagree with Nicole, I believe the mexicans do have many struggle in Mexico to push them to illegaly move to US. I believe they look to the US as a beacon of hope, they all come to America in search of the "American Dream." And in their case hope is good enough to illegaly cross the border.

I agree with Eva that it is shocking that people would be able to give up their family to make money to have a better family. It doesn't make any sense that people would leave their family behind to make hardly any money at all and save up to make their family better.
